Best time to visit Koh Samui

The best time to visit Koh Samui is from December through April. Unlike Thailand's Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi), Koh Samui faces the Gulf of Thailand and follows the northeast monsoon pattern, so its rainy season falls at a different time of year. During this dry window, temperatures stay between 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) with calm seas and clear skies.

December to April is also Koh Samui's peak tourism period, bringing heavier crowds and higher hotel rates, especially around the New Year. February and March tend to offer the sunniest, calmest conditions of the year, making them ideal for boat trips to Ang Thong Marine Park and snorkeling.

The hot season, spanning May through September, is also a good time to visit if you enjoy warm temperatures and don't mind occasional short showers. Temperatures can rise above 30°C (86°F) with high humidity, but rainfall is generally brief. July and August are popular with families due to European school holidays.

The rainy season from late October through December receives the heaviest rainfall of the year, driven by the northeast monsoon crossing the Gulf of Thailand. Storms are usually short and intense rather than day-long, but this period sees fewer visitors and better-value hotel rates.

Late October through December marks the rainy season in Koh Samui, with November typically the wettest month of the year. Rainfall arrives in heavy but short-lived spells, often followed by clear skies, which still leaves time for sightseeing and indoor activities between showers.

How to reach Koh Samui?

By Air:

Samui International Airport sits directly on the island and offers domestic flights from Bangkok along with select international routes, making it the fastest way in. Most long-haul travelers instead fly into Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok and connect onward to Samui.

From the airport:

Passengers can travel from Samui International Airport to their hotel through taxi service, private vehicle transportation, or resort shuttle transfers, most of which take under 30 minutes.

By Ferry:

Travelers coming overland can reach Koh Samui by taking a bus or train to Surat Thani on the mainland, followed by a ferry crossing that takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the operator and route.

By Car/Taxi:

Once on the island, renting a car or scooter, or hiring a taxi, provides flexibility for exploring Samui's ring road and reaching beaches, temples, and viewpoints across the island.
